Disruptive innovation in media September 9, 2009

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the (quiet) launch of the Disruptive Innovation blog.

I was reading Eric Ries’ recent post (http://bit.ly/b2IO5) on disruptive innovation in the media (‘content’) industries. While I found his post very well-written and thoughtful, there are strong alternative arguments to the vision that he lays out.

1) First, the role of Subject Matter Experts cannot be understated. Though technology tools and Web 2.0 ideas (e.g. user-generated content) can increase liquidity and decrease distribution costs (notably talent search and evaluation), there are certain individuals whose opinions will count for more than the simple votes of the masses. These individuals, possessing talent, experience or real-world networks, will continue to function as ‘virtual gatekeepers’ in the next-generation media industry.

2) Also, mass-marketing will continue to play an important role in creating awareness of products and services. The world is generally not as tech-savvy as Silicon Valley and will continue to rely on traditional mechanisms for content distribution for the foreseeable future. (Note to reader: I am writing this post from Singapore, arguably one of the world’s success stories in innovation and self-renewal.) While technology tools will chip away at these mechanisms, the innovation process may more closely resemble that of the armor and the gun: as stronger guns were designed to blast through armor, so was armor strengthened to withstand the new weaponry.

Again, congratulations Eric on another thoughtful post.
